What a spectacular day!  The sun was out, the temperature reasonable, and tail winds followed us through much of the climbs. I spent most of the day (as I expect will spend most days) riding with my friend Bruce Sherman, with whom I've been doing various bicycle rides for more than 10 years.

We departed from Sayres Park on Lake Washington at 7:20 am, after some short speeches from ALAW executive staff (where they announced our total fundraising - over $260,000!), and after goodbye hugs and a few tears. As I rode out of the parking lot I couldn't help but think "what the hell am I doing?", but soon got into the groove. I was met by about a dozen co-workers a block from my office (thanks, guys!), and then attacked the first hill.  And the second.  And the third. The longest climb started just east of North Bend as we rode on the Interstate 90 shoulder, climbing 2500 feet in 17 miles, the last 5 through the woods adjacent to Denny Creek. After a short rest at the top of Snoqualmie Pass (3000'), we rode the last 20 miles, mostly downhill, to Easton State Park.

The hot shower was most welcome, as was the socializing both before and after a delicious dinner cooked by Big Riders from 2003. Part of the camp routine is to be part of a 5-6 person team responsible for helping out with dinner, setting out lunch fixings after dinner, and doing setup/cleanup for breakfast. Bruce and I drew team #1, which means we're also responsible for training team #2. It's a great way to help out and to get to know some of the Big Riders better.

In anticipation of an early start tomorrow to beat the Central Washington heat, bedtime came just before 9:00.  All in all a great day, and a great start to an exciting summer!
