Our first day off, and a welcome one at that! I slept in until 8:00 (late for this event), and then spent a bunch of time re-organizing bags and getting things ready for the next segment of the ride. Bruce and I went a few blocks down the street to a diner for a delicious breakfast, trying to remember that we're not riding today so we don't need to eat as much. After breakfast and a stop by Starbucks, we drove to REI to buy more tent stakes (the tent didn't come with enough), and moleskin for blisters. Back to the dorm to meet some of the rest of the group, then a trip to downtown Spokane for a movie (Spiderman 2).

After the movie everyone split up, and I walked back to the dorm with Scott Broberg, Caroline, and Justine. The remainder of the afternoon was spent relaxing on the lawn, cleaning my bike chain, and making a few adjustments. We also had mail call; one of the Big Riders from 2003, a teacher from Long Island, had her 4th grade class write letters to each of us. It was really touching, if I can I'll scan the letter in and link to it from this site.

We headed out for pizza around 6:00, then back to the dorm for more socializing and viewing of some of the rough footage taken by our videographer. Headed to bed a bit earlier than last night in anticipation of another 70+ mile day.

I can tell already that we're not going to plan much for the rest days, that they truly are days to rest and recuperate for the next set of riding days. I'm already planning on a massage in Missoula!

One more note, check out the "on-the-road" report on the ALAW Big Ride site - Bruce and I made the first week's pictures!
