This was a relatively short day, but started out cold, in fact it actually hit freezing overnight. After breakfast we again headed east with light tailwind and dressed in our cold weather gear. After about 6 miles the climb up to MacDonald Pass began, and continued steadily for 5 miles. It went pretty quickly and I felt strong, and the view from the top were spectacular. It was also a feeling of accomplishment to cross the Continental Divide, this was our first real milestone of the trip. The descent from MacDonald Pass was exhilarating, that's where I hit my maximum speed of 46 mph. It was downhill all the way to Helena, where we had our midday checkpoint, and where we stopped at Subway for lunch. Then came a leisurely ride the last 25 miles or so to Townsend; Bruce and I rode with Jeanette for that stretch. Just outside of town we crossed the Missouri River, so we're making progress. We're staying at the high school in town, and have our first $10 night (that's where we each get a $10 bill for dinner in town). We'll be resting well tonight since tomorrow is our third century (I consider yesterday's 99.7 miles close enough to 100 to call it a century). |
