| We arose early to get on the road to Mt.
Rushmore before the crowds. The road between Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore was
tourist attraction after tourist attraction - reptile zoos, drive-through
animal parks, and more miniature golf courses than you would ever be able to
play. We arrived at Mt. Rushmore and spent some time looking at and
photographing the mountain. It's pretty impressive and I'm amazed at the
effort it took to create. We ate breakfast in the cafeteria there and then
went to the Visitor's Center and viewed a movie and toured the exhibits, and
then the tour buses unloaded. We then drove to Crazy Horse Mountain, which
is a work in progress, a privately funded memorial to Chief Crazy Horse, and
will be much larger than Mt. Rushmore when completed. We headed back to Rapid City before noon so we could get to the Post Office before closing and mail home some boxes of unneeded stuff. A trip to the local Wal-mart followed, then lunch at a Mongolian Grill place across the street. Spent the afternoon doing some bike cleaning and replaced my rear tire which had a pretty good cut in the tread, then had a delicious dinner at an Italian restaurant down the street. Bedtime will come early tonight since tomorrow's ride through the Badlands is a 100+ mile day and the forecast calls for 100°+ temperatures. |
