| We had another nice and relatively quick
day today, considering the 90+ mileage. I ate breakfast with Bruce,
Courtney, Alan and Beth at the grocery store across the street, where the
deli served quite a variety of breakfast platters, all very tasty and a nice
alternative to the camp breakfast. We headed out on the road a bit before
7:00 am, me with a front tire that felt like it had a slow leak, but I
decided to ride on it anyway and change it on the road if it got worse
(turns out it didn't, and that tire/tube lasted all the way to DC). Today's ride was a bit more hilly, still rolling
hills with short climbs, but much different and a good change from the dead
flat terrain we've gotten used to over the past couple of weeks. Again, we
saw lots of corn and soybean fields, in fact about every couple of miles I
say "Bruce, look over there. It's corn!". And we both laugh. I guess you had
to be there, right? I think we all get a bit punchy out here on the road. One of the highlights today occurred just outside of the town of Rochester, MN (home of the Mayo clinic). We were wearing our Wonder Bread jerseys and were about to turn back on the main highway when we heard someone's horn honking and someone yelling at us. Initially thinking we had a disgruntled driver behind us, we turned to look and saw a Wonder/Hostess van in the adjacent lane. He pulled over and we took some pictures (see the 2nd picture above) as well as exchanged email addresses and web sites (I think this Internet thing just might take off, don't you?). Yet another Big Ride moment. Chris was wearing his Corona jersey (see 3rd picture above) and was hoping to see a Corona distributor's truck, but he wasn't so lucky. The last 20 miles or so today was more hilly and went through some of the valleys that the Mississippi River went through many, many years ago. We finished the ride as we came into Winona along the banks of the Mississippi, and are staying in the dorm at Winona State University (WSU, can you believe it? What a shame...). Tonight is our last dorm night for the rest of the trip; it gets too expensive from here on out so our rest days in La Porte, Burton and Gettysburg will all be camping. After showering and doing some minor bike maintenance, we headed across the street to a pub where we did some carbo-loading (had a couple of beers), and socialized. Then to dinner at the cafeteria, not the best meal we've had so far but good enough to fuel us for tomorrow. We have smoothies being made for us in just a few minutes, and after that a showing of the movie "Office Space". In fact, we've been using lines from that movie in Big Ride context, but that's another one of those "you had to be there" things. |
