| Our wettest day to date - this was quite
interesting but in a strange way fun as well. The wind kicked up overnight
and I had to put my rain fly on the tent, so didn't sleep well since it was
so hot and humid, and with very little ventilation. We were then awakened at
4:00 am by the Napoleon police and fire departments who told us a severe
thunderstorm was heading our way, and to take down our tents and go into the
building next door on the fairgrounds. We did so, but the storm never hit,
instead passing to the north. We did set the record for the earliest Big
Ride breakfast, and many people napped on the floor or benches while waiting
for enough light to hit the road. We
rolled out at 6:30 am, the skies were cloudy and the temperatures fairly
warm (high 60's), but no rain - yet. Less than an hour after leaving camp it
started to drizzle, and slowly got worse and worse. By the time we had
reached the halfway point we were soaked, but since we had a tailwind and it
wasn't cold, we didn't put on rain gear. As we continued on we got wetter
and wetter, but it became almost funny (or ludicrous), and we really had fun
with it. The real fun lasted until we were about 10 miles from Sandusky,
when the tailwind changed to a headwind, and because we were so wet it got
really cold. This time we did put on our raingear, and even though we
were wet underneath the wind block kept us warmer. We beat our way into the
wind to the campground just outside of Cedar Point amusement park, and as we
entered the campground noticed a line of trailers that were for rent. Sure
enough, they had one available, so 3 of us are sharing it tonight. It's dry,
it's heated, it has a bathroom, a TV - what more could we ask for? It'll be
nice not to have to set up a tent and deal with the wet all night. The
campground has laundry facilities and a broadband Internet connection, so
we're getting stuff done that we usually have to do on rest days.
Our original plans were to go into Cedar Point
tonight and ride the rides, but due to the weather conditions all but 3 of
the rides are closed, so it's really not worthwhile making the trip. Bruce
and I are really disappointed as we've been looking forward to this all
summer, but so it goes. We're planning a trip to Geauga Lake amusement park
(http://www.geaugalake.com) on
Friday on our rest day in Burton, so at least we should get some roller
coaster time in then. Tonight is another $10 night, so we headed down the
road to T.G.I. Friday's for dinner, then back to the trailer to hit the hay early yet again. |
